Jean Ziegler

Professor of Sociology at the University of  Geneva and the University of Paris I, Sorbonne. At the University of Geneva, he established the Laboratory of sociology for the study of the societies of the Third World, and most of his work has focused on third world societies. Until 1999, he ws the Member of Parliament from Geneva at the Swiss Federal Parliament and active in Foreign Relations Committee. He is a member of the Executive Committee of the Socialist International. He is also a member of ATTAC-France and a member of the preparatory Committee for the World Social Forum, Porto Alegre 2002.

He is a regular contributor to «Le monde Diplomatique» as well as other international papers

He has written a number of books, including some international best-sellers. His most recent book published in the US is The Swiss, the Gold and the Dead, published by Harcourt Brace, New York, Penguin Pocket Book Edition. Jean Ziegler writes in French. His latest books «La faim dans le monde expliquée à mon fils (1999)», «Les nouveaux Maîtres du Monde et ceux qui leur résistent (2002)» and «L'empire de la honte (2005)» are not yet translated into English. In septembre 2000, Jean Ziegler was nominated as the UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to Food by the UN Commission on Human Rights.
